Significance of Death, Fear, and Deceit in Things Fall Apart Essays
Significance of Death, Fear, and Deceit in Things Fall Apart Essays Significance of Death, Fear, and Deceit in Things Fall Apart Paper Significance of Death, Fear, and Deceit in Things Fall Apart Paper Essay Topic: Things Fall apart Significance of Death, Fear, and Deceit in Things Fall Apart and Poisonwood Bible The theme of a novel is the driving force of a book. Even if the author doesnt identify an intended theme, the process is directed by a controlling idea. In both novels (Kingsolver) and (Achebe) illustrates this very well, which corresponds with the conflicts that defines each character. The results of conflict can lead to a persons death, insights fear, and enable deception. For example, the characters in the novels died at the hands of others. He heard Ikemefuna cry, My father they have killed me, nd drew his machete and cut him down. (Achebe 61) Ikemefuna was killed by his father Okonkwo which shows that he did not care about him, because he didnt want people to think he was weak. Her final gulp of air was hungry as a babys first breath. (Kingsolver 365) In Poisonwood Bible Ruth May died because a man wanted to kill Nelson, who was a worker for the Price family. A green mamba snake was put in the chicken coop to kill Nelson, but it bit Ruth May in her neck and she died instantly,w hich can be compared to be fearful. Next, fearful of their futures, Okonkwo and Rachel has a connection of their situations. It was a fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father. (Achebe 13) In Okonkwos mind he sees his father as a weak and feminine man. Okonkwo demonstrates he could be better by: providing food for his family, being a great fghter, warrior, and a great leader for his tribe. Rachels frame of mind, so that every ten minutes or so shed stop whatever she was doing and scream with disgust. (Kingsolver 266). In this situation Rachel is described as being fearful because she does not want to marry Tata Ndu. Being fearful has a way to be deceptive. Last, using deception gains self-pride. Well it turns out, Father and Mr. Axelroot hatched up a plan. (Kingsolver 269) Rachel is deceptive, because it is implied that she uses her father to get her out of a marriage that she did not want to participate in. Okonkwo lies to Ikemefuna stating that he would be taken home the next day. (Achebe 57) Okonkwo shows deception, because he did not care about Ikemefuna, he was worried about being thought of weak. Okonkwo in this situation is selfish, because he was worried about himself and not Ikemefuna. In conclusion, conflicts can change the perspective of a story. The results of conflicts can ause people to be threatened by death, fear, or deception. Ruth Mays incident illustrates that her death made a toll on her family which brought confusion and despair. Okonkwos fear of his father demonstrates how he did not want to play a role where he is lazy or imprudent. Rachels deception shows how easy you can manipulate someone Just to get out of a situation. The conflict in the novels help develop the characters to tell the readers their true instinct. Achebe, Chinua. Things Fall Apart. New York: Anchor, 1994. Print. Kingsolver, Barbara. Hybrid Publishers What are they and should you TRUST them
Hybrid Publishers What are they and should you TRUST them Hybrid Publishers: What are they and should you TRUST them? Hybrid publishers are still a bit of a mystery to many authors. The term ââ¬Å"hybridâ⬠may mean different things to different people. To some, it's interchangeable with vanity publishing - which is understandable, as they both require the author to take some financial risk in order to get the book to market. Before an author chooses to embrace or avoid this model of publishing, a lot of questions need to be asked. In this post, weââ¬â¢ll aim to cut through the noise and answer the most burning questions surrounding hybrid publishing. What are hybrid publishers? We have the answer! What are hybrid publishers? As the name hints, a hybrid publisher combines elements of traditional publishing and self-publishing. In most aspects, they function just like a traditional publisher, with the key exception that their authors will subsidize the cost of publishing and will not be given an advance on royalties.Just like traditional presses, hybrid publishers tend to have editorial, design, and marketing teams. The idea behind hybrid presses is to give a traditional-style publishing option to authors who cannot (or prefer not to) work with a traditional publisher. Self-publishing is not for everyone. If youââ¬â¢re a writer whose only interest is to write books, then you might want someone else to handle the editorial, design, and marketing work. If this is something youââ¬â¢re willing to pay for, then this might be the right choice for you.Three reasons to avoid hybrid publishing1. The publisher might struggle with marketing and salesA hybrid publisherââ¬â¢s editorial and design departments might have incredible standards - and be able to deliver a great product - but without the marketing might of a larger company, they will likely struggle to secure publicity and get your book placed into the right stores.2. The author assumes a fair amount of financial riskAt the end of the day, the author is going to be footing a significant portion of the publishing bill. And in exchange, they will have to trust that the hybrid press is doing whatââ¬â¢s best for their book. If it all doesnââ¬â¢t go to plan, and the book doesnââ¬â¢t sel l, then the author has very little recourse to recover their investment.3. Another route might be more appropriateIf the book youââ¬â¢re writing has great commercial potential, you might be better off looking to secure an agent who will pitch it to traditional publishers. Similarly, you might find that self-publishing offers the same perks and more: you can still work with professional editors and designers, and youââ¬â¢ll get an even bigger cut of the royalties. If youââ¬â¢re willing to learn about the basics of book marketing (and put them into action), you might find that you can reach a wider audience than if you leave it all to a hybrid publisherââ¬â¢s marketing department. If you want to learn more about self-publishing a book, take a quick look through our guide.Have you worked with a hybrid publisher? Or do you have any questions about them? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

The house we live in Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The house we live in - Term Paper Example Nevertheless, this is not the case as non-whites get fewer benefits although they may have worked harder than whites may. This form of treatment is present in most societal settings such as housing, customs, and even in courts. It is heartbreaking to find out that non-whites are not favored even by the government. This is because they are even denied citizenships for the mere fact that they are non-whites. At one point, a court had determined that the definition of whiteness depends on the comprehension of the white man. This implies that even the courts are giving the white man an opportunity to discriminate the non-whites since the white man would have the power to determine who is white and who deserves certain favors. This is happening even in employment places where whites are allocated the most prestigious positions although they may have lower qualifications as other non-whites. This is a form of modern day slavery where certain individuals are slaves in free countries. These behaviors happen especially in the countries that pledge fair treatment to noncitizens. This implies that racism and discrimination on grounds of skin color is an indication of hypocrisy. Personally, I do not think that race should ever be considered when offering citizenships or when giving out any opportunity. This is because all people are equal and should be treated as such. This behavior of race-based favors brings additional problems such as inequality in the society. For instance, when comparing white and black families, one can note the huge differences beginning with both groupsââ¬â¢ net worth. According to the documentary, the net worth of an average white family is at least eight times higher as compared to the black family. In the same way, the houses being sold in white dominated areas cost a lot more than those in black or even Hispanic neighborhoods. This and other differences do not translate to higher performances by

Voices of Youth Violence Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Voices of Youth Violence - Essay Example The youth are a very vulnerable group in the society and should always be handled with care. Not that they are delicate but they are an easy target when it comes to danger. The rules of engagement for a changed society that is ready to adopt t new way of doings things should be founded on honesty and respect as suggested by therapist Pipher. Understanding the rules of engagement, such as tone in arguments of the youth, would be much easier to solve their issues and come up with a more organized society when it comes to decision making processes. The youth deserve respect, and need to be heard when airing their voices about violence or for how long shall they cry go unanswered? Their decision making process is compromised and any attack which will be launched on them despite of type will for sure compromise their activities. The Dalai Lama posits that ââ¬Å"The purpose of life is to be happy and to make others happy. From a keen perspective, these words and more so Harveyââ¬â¢s statement from his book do carry a natural and much more attention to the platitudes of politicians that motivates one to realize that such cases which lead to the death of young people in the society are generated and instigated by a certain group of people which in one way or the other, leave an indelible mark on peopleââ¬â¢s psyche.

The Harrapan Civilization Essay -- essays papers
The Harrapan Civilization The Indus Valley, or Harrapan, civilization was discovered in 1920-21 when engraved seals were discovered near present-day Sahiwal in Pakistani Punjab at a place called Harappa. Excavations at Mohenjodaro in Sind discovered the buried remains of a civilization with a pictographic script. The Harappans first settled sites along the Indus River. This civilization extended to the Yamuna along the bed of the river Ghaggar in Rajhastan, Gujrat and up to the mouths of the rivers Narbada and Tapati. The Harappan culture extended from the Indus Valley through northeastern Afghanistan, on into Turkestan. Most of the major sites of this civilization are in Pakistan. In fact it is in Pakistan that an earlier phase of it has also been unearthed. This happened between 1955-57 when a Pakistani archaeologist, F.A.Khan, discovered a town of the pre-Indus period 3300 to 2800 BC at Kot Diji in Khairpur, Sind. Such sites were also discovered by Rafique Mughal in Bahawalpur, in the Cholistan desert, extending the area of this culture to the whole of southern Pakistan. The first appearance of this civilization was the early Harappan/Ravi Phase. This Ravi Phase, named after the nearby Ravi River, lasted from approximately 3300 BC, or even 3500 BC, to 2800 BC. This phase is related to the Hakra Phase, identified in the Ghaggar-Hakra river valley to the west, and predates the Kot Diji Phase (2800 -2600 BC), named after a site in northern Sindh near Mohenjo-daro. Empathy Answer
Answer and discuss briefly the following questions: 1 . The Filipino people are considered as one of the most hospitable citizens In the world- polite, friendly and honest character- but It's mind boggling and Intriguing that whenever one is put into power (given high authority or position, for example in the government), that person becomes easily Influenced and corrupted by the system transforming such person Into a malevolent leader? Reflect on this thought, and explain briefly why this occurs.Sometimes It's because of pride, compromise and organizational culture. I asked my boss about this, fist he told me that It depends to the administrative where the person gets In. In local government some people who was given higher position act and decide to make something wicked because of the word ââ¬Å"compromise and craving for power and more money'. I remember the day when the higher position (office head) on one office in LOGIC gets vacant: the head of the said administration automat ically filled the sit.On the 4th day of his service, the whole office gets shocked and created a commotion because of the memorandum he released saying that effective on that day, all division head, unit heads and budget officers were terminated with the reason of they are no longer effective in their firm. (That office is not a permanent office or department; majority of the staff are contractual and can be terminated easily). After a week, the whole staff found out that the new head of the office gave some of the vacant position and salary of those he terminated to his supporters (also a staff of that office-they are area coordinators and a driver). They believed that he did it on purpose. Example: so the funds of that office can be easily manipulated. 2. Given the status quo of the Philippines politics and society, we observed through he news how our government is slowly deteriorating due to the corrupt officials that are now involved and even convicted In crimes, particularly the controversial ââ¬Å"Pork Barrel Scamâ⬠. Based from the character of these Politicians/ Government officials In our country that we elect, what kind of leaders are they?Do they embody the ââ¬Å"Ideal leaderâ⬠that's why we elect them? What can you say about the ââ¬Å"Intellectual Judging capacityâ⬠of the Filipinos on why we have elected these government leaders In the first place? At first, the time politicians' campaign during election period, the people TLD know If they are telling the truth. Some were true to themselves and willing to serve and give his/her best effort and knowledge for the benefit of his/her countrymen (those behind even though they are known as a good politicians. The common alibi for someone who was not able to fulfill his or her promise is that ââ¬Å"promises are made to be brokenâ⬠. Or, is this the favorite responses of politicians who make a lot of promises even do they know too well that they will not be able to fulfill such promise s just to win. Election fever is now in the air in the Philippines. The people will be selecting a new president, vice president, senators, and all provincial and local officials. For local officials who will be elected, they will be serving for a term of three (3) years. There's a saying that ââ¬Å"The moment this child encounters these other beings, the influences upon the individual beginsâ⬠. Even if they are not a good leader because of their weaknesses, I could say that they also have capacity to ran and implement the peace and order in the country. The eyes, ears, feelings of other politicians are always open to defend people from their evil doings. But, the process gets slow because the root of all evil things is in a greater higher position and trying to manipulate the situations.
